How to grow on X in 2026: what the algorithm actually rewards
Most growth advice on X is written by people selling growth advice. This is what we see in the actual numbers, across thousands of posts we analyze for MomentX users, small accounts included.
Replies are the strongest signal there is
The For You feed optimizes for conversation, not applause. A post with 12 replies and 40 likes will usually out-distribute a post with 4 replies and 200 likes. When you write, the question is not "will people like this" but "will someone feel the need to answer this".
That is why formats that invite an answer keep working: hot takes that split the audience, specific questions only practitioners can answer, before and after comparisons people want to argue with.
Dwell time decides more than you think
X measures how long people actually look at your post. A wall of text gets skimmed and skipped. The same idea, broken into short lines of 3 to 7 words, holds the eye for a couple of seconds longer, and that is enough to change how far the post travels.
- First line under 60 characters. It has to work alone, because that is all most people read.
- Hard line breaks. Scannable beats clever.
- One idea per post. Two ideas is a thread, not a post.
Links in the main post suppress reach
X wants people to stay on X. A post whose body ends in an external link gets measurably less distribution than the same post without it. If you need the link, put it in the first reply. Media is the opposite: screenshots, terminal output and short clips lift reach.
The first hour decides distribution
Early velocity matters. A post that earns replies in its first 30 to 60 minutes gets pushed to more timelines; one that starts silent mostly stays silent. Two practical consequences:
- Post when your audience is awake. Your own analytics tell you when that is, and we wrote a full guide on finding your best time to post.
- Be around after you post. Answering the first replies quickly compounds the signal.
Small accounts grow in other people's threads
Under roughly a thousand followers, your own posts barely get sampled by the feed. Replies are the shortcut, because a reply rides the distribution of the post above it. We wrote a whole piece on doing this well: the reply strategy.
